Why You Should Start Streaming or Making Videos—Even If You're Not Looking to Make Money Right Away
Hello, gamers!
I want to touch on a topic that many of you may have already considered or are on the fence about: streaming or creating videos based on the way you play. Honestly, a lot of gamers have thought about this at least once. And I can tell you from experience—if you have a mic and the ability to make a video, no matter what, you should go for it!
But here's the thing: many people go into streaming or video creation thinking they’ll rack up tons of subscribers and start making money right away. Let me tell you—this shouldn’t be your goal. Sure, many will tell you (or even yourself) that you should make videos because it’s profitable. But that’s not the reason you should do it, and it can actually set you up for disappointment.
If your main focus is trying to get subscribers and make money, you’ll get frustrated when things don’t go as planned. Eventually, you’ll start thinking that making videos isn’t worth it, and that’s when most people quit. Let’s be honest: if you’re looking for value and not the fun in it, you won’t last.
Becoming a big streamer or YouTuber requires the right mindset—something a lot of people don’t have. Some lucky people get big without the right mindset, but they’re the exceptions. For most of us, growing a channel takes time, patience, and consistency. But if you focus on the fun side of things first, then the rest will follow naturally.
The best part is, when you’re having fun and making content because you enjoy it, that energy will shine through. Viewers can spot when a streamer is more interested in making money than making good content. Think about it: nobody wants to give money without receiving something of value in return. That’s why your focus should be on having fun and making content that excites you—not just chasing the money right away.
It’s true that following the trending games can help your channel grow, but what happens when you get tired of that game? What if you want to move on to something else? The viewers will notice, and you might lose some of them. That’s why it’s important to build a community that follows you for you—not just the games you play.
For example, if I were to stream, I’d play all kinds of games, from RPGs to FPSs—anything that I’m excited about at the time. While I could follow the trending games, I wouldn’t be tied to just one. I’d want to bring my own style to whatever I’m playing. The viewers who follow me would know this about my channel, and that’s why they’d stick around—they’d be following me, not just a single game or trend.
If you only play one game or stick to one niche, your community will be built around that. The moment you switch things up, you might lose a lot of viewers and subscribers. So, be mindful of the type of content you want to create, and focus on what you enjoy the most.
Also, remember to be yourself. Don’t try to be someone else unless you want to create a persona-based channel. If that’s the route you take, you need to commit to that persona fully, because once you start gaining followers, they’re following that persona.
If you have time to stream, just play like you always do. If streaming doesn’t appeal to you right now, start with YouTube videos. There’s always someone out there who will enjoy and follow your content. Don’t fall for the trap of thinking that streaming or video-making is oversaturated. A lot of people start and quit because they don’t enjoy the process; they just want the profit. But those who stick with it for the fun of it? They’re the ones who succeed.
Treat video creation like a game, not a way to make money. You play games because they’re fun, right? You want to improve, level up, and enjoy the experience. Treat your streaming and video-making the same way. Trust me—a simple mindset shift can make all the difference.
I’ve applied this same principle to the way I write for this blog. I do it because I love sharing what I know, and every time I write a post, I feel like I’m leveling up my understanding. We gamers always say life is like a game, but we don’t always apply it. Now’s your chance to do just that. So, go ahead, start streaming, start making videos! You might fail at first, but just like in games, you get to retry and improve.
In a few years, do you want to look back and regret not trying? Or would you rather be proud of what you’ve accomplished, knowing you enjoyed the ride? I know what I’d choose.
I hope that after reading this, you feel inspired to start your streaming or video-making journey. Focus on the fun, and success will come when you least expect it.
Good luck out there, and happy gaming!
